The Boys Update

The Boys both had half-birthdays this week. Anthony turned 1½ and Damien 3½.

18! Does that mean he can vote?

42. The ultimate answer to life, the universe, and everything poopy.

Oh, did I mention that Damien had a severe UTI or bladder infection? It started on Thursday when he kept grabbing his crotch and screaming "it hurts!" We took him to the doctor, who could not get a urine sample, even with a catheter. We could tell his bladder was full, so thinking there was something blocking it, she advised we take him to the hospital for an ultrasound. Along the way, he peed and, thinking that meant there was no blockage, we took him home (on doctor's advice). However, that didn't explain the foul smell in his diaper.

Friday passed without incident, but on Saturday morning, he woke up screaming. For the next three hours, I got the wonderful they-don't-tell-you-about-this-when-you-become-a-parent pleasure of sitting with him on the couch for three hours while he screamed in pain and yelled "it hurts!". Finally, he got up and ran towards the bathroom, screaming in agony and peeing along the way. We were a bit too distressed to note that his reaction to peeing was to run for the potty.

Noting the wretched smell of the diaper, and now the white goopy substance in it, we opted to take him to the doctor...

...who wanted a urine sample. Easier said than done, with a non-potty-trained three-year-old. Of course, since he had just peed, he was pretty empty, and since he was empty, he was all smiles and giggles, since it no longer hurt. The nurse put a bag on him, and then most of my Saturday was spent in the waiting room of the doctor's office, waiting for him to go. Eventually, we just left for the mall next door to the hospital (see above), then went home.

When he finally peed that evening (while napping), it came out thick and cloudy. I took it back to the doctor, who took one look at it and prescribed antibiotics. The nurse ran a urinalysis on it anyways, and it basically tested positive for everything it could be positive for.

The next hour or so was spent trying to find a 24-hour pharmacy (it was about 8pm by this point and everything was closed). Once we actually gave him the antibiotic, just before bed time, he started to get better. The fishy smell and cloudiness was just about gone by the next morning. That stuff works quick.

Abu and Aba bought the boys some snow coats, boots, and mittens for Christmas/Epiphany. We tried them on Damien, who promptly announced that he wanted to go to "blue car" so he could go "build snowman".

He was very disappointed when I informed him there was no snow outside.

  1. Poor Damien! That was a pretty severe UTI. I've had a couple and they were pretty uncomfortable but nowhere near as bad as Damien's. It must have been festering for a while. I'm glad you finally got a diagnosis and the right medication for it. You might try getting him to drink cranberry juice in the future to prevent a recurrence. I wonder if eating Craisins (dried cranberries) would have a similar benefit?
